Access Car
We have two wheelchair accessible cars which are available for use by registered passengers and local community groups at non-profit making rates and can be used for a wide range of activities. The vehicles may be used for short and long-distance trips and can be used to transport people who find it very difficult or impossible to use public transport. You can book an Access Car up to 12 months before your trip.
The cars have 2/3 passenger seats plus space to carry one wheelchair or one mobility scooter. Please note that we are only permitted to carry certain mobility scooters and passengers must transfer from the scooter to a car seat to travel.
Who is it for?
This service is available to disabled individuals and to small groups or families where one member is disabled. It is particularly suitable for people who need to travel in their wheelchair. It can also be used by small voluntary groups for trips.
What can it be used for?
Journeys can be for any social purpose - shopping, visiting, theatre trips, a family get together, days out, holidays.
Where can we go?
Anywhere in mainland Britain.
When can it be used?
The Access car can be used any time – for a few hours, all day, for a weekend or even a week’s holiday; including evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.
How do I book the Access Car?
Telephone 01793 617828 between 9.00am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday, giving as much notice of your journey as possible.
To drive the car you must be over 21 and under 70, and have held a full, clean driving licence for at least two years.
All drivers will be given full training on the vehicle and the safety and wheelchair securing equipment.
Do I need to be registered?
Before you can use the Access Car service, you need to register a few details with us. All information will be treated as confidential. To do this phone the booking line on 01793 617828 or email transport@dialarideswindon.org.uk If you are already registered on the Dial A Ride service all we will need is payment and driver information.
How much does it cost?
Charges are based on the length of time you want the car for and the mileage you do. The cost includes fuel, insurance, breakdown cover and VAT. We will send an invoice after your journey which can be paid by cash, cheque or bank transfer.
